John Stones was the hero as he scored a stoppage-time winner as Manchester City came from behind to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.
Jorgen Strand Larsen gave Wolves an early lead in the seventh minute. However Josko Gvardiol struck a superb effort to level the score in the 33rd minute.
The game looked to be heading for a draw but John Stones emerged. As the hero as he headed home a 90+5 minute corner to give City a comeback win. Despite initially disallowing the goal before VAR intervened.
The game ended with Pep Guardiola’s team collecting 20 points from 8 games. Temporarily leading the league, before being overtaken by Liverpool after defeating Chelsea.
Next up for City is a Champions League clash at home to Sparta Prague on Wednesday, before returning to the Premier League to face Southampton. And here’s what we saw from last night’s game at Molineux Ground.
Haaland missing from the game
It’s become more common than ever for Man City to fall behind in the Premier League and this was yet another such situation.
Wolves forward Jørgen Strand Larsen has come on the pitch determined to show fans that Erling Haaland is not the only Norwegian striker defenders should fear.
Strand Larsen beat both John Stones and Rico Lewis to turn home from Nelson Semedo’s cross to give Wolves an early lead.
It was the 24-year-old’s third goal in eight league appearances and has seen City trail in four of their last six games.
Haaland’s past record against Wolves has been impressive. With eight goals in his previous four games. But this time he has had no chances and has had fewer touches in those four matches.
Guardiola always has a killer move
Despite all the talk about Pep Guardiola’s precise passing in football, statistics show that Man City have scored seven goals from outside the penalty area this ทางเข้า ufabet season, with Guardiola’s equaliser one of them.
Despite being left-footed, Guardiola struck a superb right-footed effort from outside the area to give City an equaliser after previously having given Wolves the lead.
The Croatian defender gave Semedo plenty of time. Before he crossed for Strand Larsen to easily tap in.
Before his move, Guardiola was seen as a replacement for John Stones and Ruben Dias. But he has since become the team’s first-choice left-back and has scored seven goals since.
Stones’ winning goal
Stones became another Man City hero after scoring a 90+8 minute equaliser against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium last month.
The England defender headed home the winner in the 95th minute to give City a 2-1 comeback win over Wolves.
However, his goal was controversial as Bernardo Silva was in an offside position, obscuring Jose Sa before Stones headed home.
Although Chris Kavanagh initially disallowed the goal, VAR intervened by checking the monitor and then changed it to a goal.
“I think about the goal we had disallowed last year. We showed the referee that the West Ham goalkeeper had a clear view of the ball,” said Wolves boss Gary O’Neill. Referring to the controversial incident towards the end of last season when he was banned for criticising the referee.
“The reason the referee disallowed the goal was because one of our players was in close proximity to the opponent’s goal, which could have affected the play.”
“Today, Bernardo Silva was less than a yard away from Jose Sa. So I hoped the referee would use the same reasoning, but it didn’t happen.”
A new record is born
Today’s win means Man City have now gone 31 Premier League games unbeaten (W25 D6). The longest such run in the club’s history.
It was an impressive achievement and a testament to the class and consistency that Guardiola’s side have built.
In terms of overall English top-flight history, only six teams have gone 31 games unbeaten, with Liverpool most recently going 44 games from January 2019 to February 2020.
